Can a Place Become Haunted Without Anyone Dying There?

I was recently asked during a tour, “Can a place become haunted without anyone dying there?”  I thought about this question for a while before I answered, and my answer was “Yes.”  A place can definitely become haunted without anyone dying there.

The first way I thought of was a spirit communication session gone wrong, such as a séance or Ouija Board session.  One of the most important things I see people failing to do after spirit communication is closing out their session.  After every session, saying “Goodbye” out loud is always a good habit to develop, especially when using a Ouija Board.  By saying goodbye, you confirm that whatever means are used or conduits opened to contact the spirit are closed.  By saying Goodbye, you are prohibiting the spirit from any further access to our realm.

Another reason is performing rituals.  Some rituals require the calling forth of spirits, especially Necromancy and Maleificum rituals.  Many times, inexperienced practitioners will perform these rituals and summon something they cannot control.    Since spirits need to form an attachment to remain in our realm, they may choose to form an attachment to a specific location.  Once they cross over into our realm, they are not easily controlled and could cause havoc.

The last reason I could think of is by choice.  In our modern-day society, most people pass away in hospitals or nursing homes.  A person spends their entire life is a particular house; they grow up there, raised a family there, and grew old there.  There are just too many fond memories for them to leave.  So, when they pass away, they choose to remain in their home.  If you’re a ghost hunter, this isn’t an uncommon occurrence.

I hope these three reasons answer the question, “Can a place become haunted without anyone dying there?”  I know many more reasons could answer this question, but for a 300-word blog, these are probably the most common.
